The Biking Vikings draw inspiration from the Birkebieners of 13th century Norway. Here is their story.
In 1205 the Birkebeiners rescued the 3 year old Prince Hakoon Hakonsson from a fierce rival faction. The Birkebeiners chose 2 skilled skiers who carried the young prince to safety in Trondheim. They selected a most difficult route over 2 mountains in order to avoid detection.
Prince Hakoon grew up to become King of Norway and united the country, ending hundreds of years of civil war. Today Norwegians still celebrate this event with the Birkebeiner ski race.
