JDRF is the leading global organization focused on Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) research. Over 300,000 Canadians have T1D, leaving them insulin-dependent for life, with the constant threat of developing devastating complications. Our mission is to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications.
Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. Unlike type 2 diabetes, T1D is not linked to being overweight, lack of exercise or other lifestyle factors. It is not preventable, and its cause is unknown
