Help Joseph raise money

For participating in Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon Virtual Race 2020

My Story…

Dear Friends and Supporters of Yee Hong,

This is the time of the year I am writing to you to support Yee Hong, an organization serving so many seniors and one many say is a dream and miracle come true.

A friend of mine said a few years ago she could not imagine what would have happened to so many seniors benefitting from Yee Hong if there is no Yee Hong.  Tens of thousands would have been impacted.  Yee Hong serves over 26,000 seniors and their family members annually.

Aging trend is inevitable.  All of us will grow old some day, if we are blessed.  With a strong and thriving Yee Hong, we know there is a great organization we can fall back on at times of need.

With impact of Covid 19, we are trying extra hard to raise necessary funds to maintain and expand our services in response to rising needs.

We are willing and pleased to go extra miles, but we need your support.

This year, I am not only taking up the challenge of the 5 Km Waterfront Marathon, I am challenging myself to exercise every day in October, at least 5 km a day, and I am aiming at over 10 Km a day for at least 15 days.

I just want to let you know a lesson I learned, and hopefully it might inspire some of you to do the same.

Around this time a year ago, I developed disturbing palpitation with irregular heart beats.  72 hours Holtor recording showed that 14% of my heart beats were abnormal, called premature ventricular arrhythmia.  This is not only disturbing with chest discomfort and shortness of breath, it can be dangerous at times.

Christine and I went on a cruise for a week during Christmas.  I seldom, if at all, have time to do exercise (I do not generally have time to sleep or have regular meals), so on this cruise, I exercised for more than an hour every day.  My son Michael, gave me an i-watch as my birthday gift last year.  It gave me awards everyday for fulfilling the exercise goals.  So everyday since last Christmas, I tried to win the awards from Apple by doing exercise.  Suddenly I noticed the disturbing symptoms I had in the preceding two months disappeared.  They have never recurred since.

When I was doing treadmill during the cruise, my heart rate went up to 140 when I was walking at 5 Km an hour.  That means I was totally out of conditioning.

Now I am walking at 6 Km an hour, my heart rate has never gone past 108.  My i-watch shows in the EKG that my heart rhythm is regular and quite a bit slower than before.  I am gradually reconditioning (in machines you call refurbishing) my cardiovascular system.

I am asking my friends to continue to support my endeavours.  With reconditioning, I hope that I will be around for some time to continue doing what I love to do, that I have been blessed to be in a position to give and contribute.

Description

As the population continues to age and the demand for geriatric care continues to increase, the waitlist for a Yee Hong bed has grown to over 6000 people with a wait time that can be as long as 10 years.  The Ontario Government has approved Yee Hong for 800 additional beds in three new centres in Scarborough, Markham and Mississauga, virtually doubling our current capacity.  For this we must raise at least $80 million of the total $300 million cost to realize this plan to cater to the aging population.  Join us as Yee Hong expands services to more seniors.
