Help Christine raise money

For participating in Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon Virtual Race 2020

My Story…

This year I am going the distance for women’s rights in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon walking 10K. Many of you have supported me for years. This year is going to be different. First I always walk with Crossroader Meredith Low (Zimbabwe 1990) and her daughter.  She is a mom, so there are always healthy snacks and a sweet.  I have brand appropriate sneakers, there is a soundtrack, a familiar route and thousands of Torontonians walking running for causes that move them. Its inspiring and I love it. It is more than just a race. It is the change we can effect.

This year I walk alone. I haven't loved COVID, I miss my family and friends, but I haven't lost them. My brand appropriate sneakers, they are on their last walk. Overall it hasn't been the worst for me and Rick.

But I can tell you honestly in ESwatini, it is the worst. Talking with our partner Nonhlanhla Dlamini ED of Swaziland Action Against Abuse last week, I learned that when schools finally reopened after lockdown she witnessed the highest incidence of teen pregnancy in schools she has seen. In one school 30 girls were pregnant. These are children. Hundreds more are out of school and likely not to return.  The UN  is reporting a ‘horrifying global surge’ in domestic violence towards women and girls, linked to COVID-19 lockdownsWomen globally are experiencing a heightened risk of gender-based violence from abusive partners and increased isolation, separating them from the people and resources that can best help them.

We can make a difference.  Global Affairs Canada will commit up to $250,000 to fund Crossroads COVID response and we are seeking matching funds in the same amount to help partners keep essential services going and to adapt to new reality for long term sustainable solutions.  If you are in a position to give, please join me by making a gift today.
