Description
Jamii is an arts organization with an intention of both community building & nurturing women in leadership.
Since 2011, The Esplanade – one of downtown Toronto’s most diverse communities – has been enlivened by the local arts organization Jamii (Swahili for "community"). Through the production of over 120 memorable arts-based experiences that recognize and celebrate all people and genders while nurturing female leadership, Jamii strengthens community and lifts spirits.
Jamii is also building bridges with communities in Pikangilum First Nation, Wawa and Wolfe Island, and about to embark on a journey with artists in Nairobi, Kenya. Its most recent initiative, the Kisanii Hub, is a mobile arts space that presented live performances in street corners, courtyards and green spaces for neighbours to enjoy from a safe distance during the current pandemic.
Last but not least, Jamii launched its first children's festival, Wayo, in August 2020. Our intent with Wayo is to expose as many young people as possible to curated live arts experiences in their own community. Any funds raised with the 2020 STWM will go towards our second edition of Wayo in August 2021. We thank you for your support.
