My Story…

Sarah and I will be doing a 5km run (I will be walking, she will be running) on September 13 to raise money for the Assaulted Women's Help line. Now more than ever the Assaulted Women's help line needs our help. The counselling staff went into overdrive when lockdown measures were implemented. At peak, monthly call volumes exceeded 6,000 calls to the core line and a further 3,100 to the Seniors Safety Line. To put that in perspective, normal monthly calls are in the range of 3,500-4,000 on the women’s line and 700 on the Seniors Safety Line. Please consider donating to help raise money for the Assaulted Women's Help Line.

Description

I am running in support of the Assaulted Women's Helpline, a 24/7 telephone crisis line for women who are experiencing abuse anywhere in Ontario to call and speak to a trained counsellor for support and information. 

It's been quite the year for Helpline.  The emergency measures designed to help curb the spread of COVID-19 created dangerous conditions for many women forced to isolate with abusive partners.  Calls increased dramatically.  In one week over 40% of calls received a busy signal.  The Helpline responded by adding more staff.  But increasing staff, means increasing costs and with many other fundraising events being cancelled, the Assaulted Women's Helpline needs your support more than ever to ensure that women in need continue to access the supports they need, when they need them. 

On behalf of the nearly 50,000 women who access the Helpline annually, thank you for supporting my run!
