My Story…
Four years ago my eight month old great nephew was diagnosed with Leukodystrophy (Krabbe), a rare genetic disorder that affects the central and peripheral nervous systems. Once symptoms begin, there is no cure, so my niece and her husband were told to take him home and make memories. I can't begin to describe how horrific it is to watch a healthy progressing eight month old begin losing the ability to play, roll over, sit and smile, and slowly regress until they pass. No parent should ever go through this torture.
As he got closer to the end of his life, we heard about an amazing place called Ryan House, a hospice where children with end of life, or life limiting illnesses, and their families can go for help and support. To say this place was amazing is an understatement. They made our whole family (and that's a lot of us) feel welcome and they made sure we had everything we needed while navigating this nightmare of a journey. He survived four more months after the diagnosis and was in Ryan House when his first birthday arrived. The entire staff rushed to put together a birthday party for him with decorations, cards, food and more. With their help we were able to celebrate his birthday right there with all of us around him. He passed shortly after with the Hospice people holding our family's hands and hearts and guiding us through the journey.
Help and support like that is priceless and you can't put a price tag on it, but they didn't charge us a dime! All of their work and service is provided through donations to Ryan House. Needless to say, our family are now big supporters and cheerleaders for Ryan House. If they need donations, we donate, if they need snacks, games or toys, we are there to provide them, if they want us to form a team to walk, we walk.
Please consider making a donation to Ryan House or participating in their annual run. This year because of Covid, it will be virtual, which means you can walk wherever you'd like and still get your medal and t-shirt! It doesn't get any easier than that. If you'd like to register and "join" our team, look for Team King Con Strong....it stands for King Connor, our special angel in heaven.
Thank you and God Bless you!
