This is the second year I will be running for all those who have been touched by mental health conditions, considered suicide, or have survived/thrived after a suicide attempt. Years ago, after publicly sharing my story, someone who didn't understand the struggles associated with depression and assumed they understood my journey chided me with a “you-should-have-followed-through”. Had I not been of sound mind (as I was in early 2014), this could have had drastic consequences. However, instead, this nasty (and downright ignorant) comment was what drove me to continue to share my story through blog posts, social media, fundraising, and leadership talks. These days, I have become an advocate for mental health and suicide awareness, choosing to share my story openly in order to educate, inspire, and work to "normalize" the conversation around depression and its link to suicidal thoughts.
