Losing my aunt to lung cancer was sad, but sadder still was my last conversation with her in hospice. She said to me, "Nanc, I guess I deserve to die. I just couldn't beat the smoking habit."

I remember arguing with her and telling her that we all have unhealthy habits. She didn't deserve to die any more than the rest of us. We all miss her loving and fun presence in the world and now, as executive director of A Breath of Hope, I have learned how dangerous it is for society to believe that smokers are the only ones getting lung cancer and they deserve it. This unking stigma only adds to the misery families experience, and it tricks nonsmokers into feeling safe.
