My Story...
There is a tradition at Camp to conclude training when all the volunteers gather in a giant circle, forming a timeline from when they first arrived on Camp property as a volunteer. So for me, 'my story' with Camp started on July 21st, 2007 around 12:34 pm.
On the first day of camp I choose to go by Doughnut, an old nickname of mine, and it stuck. To be honest, most volunteers and pretty much all of the campers don't actually know my real name... (shhh don't tell!).
This will be my 15th year volunteering and during that time I have participated in as many aspects of Camp as I could, from summer sessions to weekends at camp to in-hospital & in-city programming, the list goes on and on...
One of the things I have yet to check off on my Camp BINGO card is run in the Sporting Life 10K, and this year is the year! I am not much of a runner so I asked my Mum - who has been running charity races for cancer for over 10 years - if she wanted to join me and she agreed! And so Mamma Doughnut was made!
Thank you for reading my story. I have always said, "If magic exists anywhere in the world it exists at Camp Ooch." Please give what you can so that our phenomenal campers and their families can experience that magic!
Description
A diagnosis of childhood cancer changes life in an instant.
For affected kids and families, it can suddenly feel like everything is about cancer. Camp Ooch offers a hopeful journey, where kids with cancer can just be kids, and families connect with a community of strength and support when they need it the most.
They are much more than a summer camp—they offer the social cure for childhood cancer. Their camp-inspired programs deliver fun, friendship, and community to 1,900 kids and 745 families year-round, all across Ontario. As a response to COVID-19, virtual camp and in-hospital programs continue to reach kids and families living in isolation, wherever they are.
Please consider making a donation to my fundraising efforts—your gift will make a world of difference!
Cancer changes a child’s life. So does camp. And so can you.
