My Story...
Henry is days away from his 5 year anniversary of diagnosis - the day that changed his life, and ours, forever. I'll never forget waking up in hospital the morning after we found out his diagnosis. It would be a big day - biopsies, chemo, all of these soon-to-be-familiar procedures that we would endure over the next 3.5 years. We walked into the playroom, and there was Ken from Ooch, strumming his ukelele and singing an uplifting song. Having not met Henry before, he introduced himself and created this immediate sense of comfort and joy. As Henry's mother, I was doing everything in my power to hold back my tears. But there was Ken, singing, and somehow not crying. To this day, I don't know how these counselors do it. Camp Ooch is about the experience of camp, and it's about the people who bring those experiences to our kids through the worst of times, and the better times. Being part of the I'm With Henry team, raising money each year for Ooch, is one of the most important things we do to recognize all that Camp does for us and for all of the other families going through this journey. A diagnosis of childhood cancer changes life in an instant.
For affected kids and families, it can suddenly feel like everything is about cancer. Camp Ooch offers a hopeful journey, where kids with cancer can just be kids, and families connect with a community of strength and support when they need it the most.
They are much more than a summer camp—they offer the social cure for childhood cancer. Their camp-inspired programs deliver fun, friendship, and community to 1,900 kids and 745 families year-round, all across Ontario. As a response to COVID-19, virtual camp and in-hospital programs continue to reach kids and families living in isolation, wherever they are.
