Help me go the distance for Camp Ooch in the Sporting Life Virtual 10k!
On every Mother’s Day in years past, Sporting Life would host its annual 10k run to raise vital funds for Camp Ooch, a camp for children affected by childhood cancer. Instead of running yesterday, I visited my mother’s memorial in Thornhill to mark the 20th Mother’s Day since we lost her to cancer. It is a peaceful spot shaded by a towering pine. It made me recall some of the memories I had spending time at camp as a child.
“Between every two pines is a doorway to a new world”. That stirring line by American naturalist John Muir is what summer camp means for many children. For children affected by childhood cancer, summer camp allows them to feel like kids again. This is why I’m seeking to raise funds for Camp Ooch through my participation in the Sporting Life Virtual 10k. Last year, I ran 10, 10ks in 10 days. This year, I’m going to try and beat that goal and run 300k this month with a fundraising goal of $1000.

A diagnosis of childhood cancer changes life in an instant.
For affected kids and families, it can suddenly feel like everything is about cancer. Camp Ooch offers a hopeful journey, where kids with cancer can just be kids, and families connect with a community of strength and support when they need it the most.
They are much more than a summer camp—they offer the social cure for childhood cancer. Their camp-inspired programs deliver fun, friendship, and community to 1,900 kids and 745 families year-round, all across Ontario. As a response to COVID-19, virtual camp and in-hospital programs continue to reach kids and families living in isolation, wherever they are.
