My Story…
I have decided to collect donations in support of the Calgary branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) for the 2021 Calgary Marathon. I chose this charity in memory of my dad, Chris Paniak, a neuropsychologist who suffered from bipolar disorder. My father took his own life in December of 2020 at the age of 57.
Like my father, mental health has been something that has impacted my life greatly, as it has for so many other men; many of whom don't reach out for help for fear of stigmatization. By raising money for the CMHA, I hope to help the organization provide affordable and accessible mental health services to everyone who needs them. I myself have benefited greatly from various forms of aid they provide, in addition to taking advantage of other outlets in my life such as running.
Mental illness is just as serious as any physical illness, if left untreated or unaddressed in a meaningful capacity. It's easy to try and bottle everything in and get through personal hardships; it takes courage to seek out help from trusted sources of support. Help me break the stigma surrounding mental illness and donate to my fundraising campaign if you are in a position to do so. If you're not, encourage those around you who are in need of support to reach out for help, and reassure them that they don't have to go through tough times alone. Thanks!
