I wanted to start 2021 with goals that I can accomplish in 6 months.  It seemed daunting in the beginning but after reflecting on what I wanted to achieve, it came back to what I love to do – running.  I am a runner and I try at all times to stay healthy, both physically and mentally.  I decided to register for the Tamarack Ottawa Virtual Race Weekend and run 50 kms.  I’ve completed this distance in 2016 and 2017 on trails. Never have I run more than 42.2 km on the road, in one day. However, the idea of running with a goal to raise funds for an organization close to my heart motivated me to sign up for this event.

I am a Registered Practical Nurse working at Hospice Care Ottawa.  I received my diploma in 2018 and while I was in school, I set my heart on providing end-of-life care to patients and supporting their families.  

Hospice Care Ottawa is a community-based charitable organization offering palliative and end-of-life programs and services to people living in the City of Ottawa.  Services are provided at no charge by a dedicated team of Nurses, Personal Support Workers, administrative staff and volunteers.

While the government provides 60% of operational funds, Hospice Care Ottawa must raise the rest, nearly $2 million annually.  This means they rely upon generous donors and special events to provide hospice care at no additional cost to families.   

The funds raised from my 50 km run will go towards compassionate end-of-life care in Hospice Residences, Community Hospice Care, Bereavement Care and Caregiver Support. Training for the run has started and soon I will be sharing my journey on my Facebook and Instagram accounts.
