Why I support West Cancer Foundation
"My cancer journey began on April 20th 2013, exactly two weeks after Rusty and I got married.
At the time I was running 35 miles a week, taking classes at the gym, and overall feeling great and a cancer diagnosis was the farthest thing from my mind.
After noticing a bulge in my abdomen and consultation with my doctor; I was immediately referred to Dr. Todd Tillmanns and my experience with the West Cancer Center began. Every time I walked through the doors of the West Cancer Center, I was not just a patient, I was Kate. The receptionists, nurses, doctors, and volunteers greeted me by name and I learned from them that fighting cancer takes teamwork and the team at the West Cancer Center was always by my side.
When my cancer returned in 2013 and again in 2016, an innovative treatment called HIPEC or Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) was paired with tumor debulking surgeries. A heated chemotherapy was washed through my abdomen, while I was rocked back and forth on the operating table with the goal of killing any remaining cancer cells directly at the site of the disease. I feel fortunate that I was one of the first patients to utilize this type of innovative treatment and have experienced first hand the importance of cancer research.
I FIGHT ON for cancer research for myself and everyone impacted by this disease and I am grateful for everyone who has supported me on Team 5-Kate over the past 8 years. I hope you will join me on September 11th or as a spirit participant as we FIGHT ON together!”
