Miles for Migraine

Migraine is a complex, debilitating, genetic neurological disease. Over 60 million people have the disease, and more than 4 million of us have chronic migraine. For me chronic migraine means daily symptoms including head pain, dizziness, disorientation, loss of words and cognitive issues. I had to leave my job nearly 3 years ago and haven't been able to go back due to disabling symptoms.

While my disease is refractory (which means it doesn't respond to the treatments that help many with migraine), I consider myself lucky to be under the care of the doctors and fellows at Georgetown Headache for the past year. They don't give up on helping me achieve more symptom free or reduced days.

I am lucky not only because Georgetown provides the best migraine care in the region, but, also because it's so hard for migraine patients to access ANY headache specialist. For all of us, there are less than 600 headache specialists. To become a headache specialist one must first become a neurologist and then complete a fellowship. Such low numbers of specialists leads to months long waits to see a specialist, if you are lucky enough to get in at all.

That is why Georgetown's fellowship program is so critical. They have already graduated two fellows and currently have two fellows in the program.

I met Dr. Dougherty two years ago at Headache on the Hill. She is a tireless advocate for migraine and better answers for those of us who really need them.  Please help me thank her and support the fellowship program at Georgetown.
