My Story
Please join our family in raising funds and awareness for Autism and our beloved running club, Team Verge.
Our family found Team Verge in 2018. At just 7, Avery was uncomfortable with doing any kind of team sports and generally reluctant to try things she was unfamiliar with. Team Verge, which takes a family approach to running, gave us the unique opportunity to do a fun and healthy activity together. Oscar joined in with his big sister in 2019 and Annabel in 2021.
Team Verge has been a phenomenal journey for our family. It has given our kids a unique opportunity to set and achieve goals for themselves and to learn how to be great team members, how to accept others with differences and to support each teammate as they reach for their own personal bests.
One of the things we like best about Team Verge is that it is an “inclusive” running club which not only supports younger, reluctant and shy athletes, but also those with challenges that might make joining other sports teams or clubs difficult. Team Verge manages the tricky balance of being a serious running club without being overly competitive and gives everyone a place they can belong while they push to better themselves.
Included in our Team Verge community are a number of teammates who are on the Autism spectrum, as their need for such an activity and environment is particularly acute. At this point, the demand for participation and requests for adding additional sessions and locations is outstripping capacity – Team Verge is a 501c non-profit and at this point fully volunteer run and operated.
Given the makeup of our community and the inclusive mission of Team Verge, a partnership with the Flutie Foundation for Autism is a perfect fit. The Flutie Foundation has generously agreed to allow Team Verge keep 100% of funds raised by Team Verge through our participation in the Flutie 5K. These funds will be used to expand the program and hire additional specialists so that Team Verge can continue to grow and perform its vital role for additional families and communities.

Description
Join me in reaching my goal for the 2021 Flutie 5k for Autism: Dougie's Epic Adventure, to raise critical funds for the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism to help people and families affected by autism live life to the fullest!
Former NFL Quarterback, Doug Flutie, and his wife Laurie started the Doug Flutie, Jr. Flutie Foundation for Autism in 1998 after their son, Dougie, was diagnosed with autism at the age of three. Their personal experience of raising a son on the autism spectrum inspired them to help others on an equally long and challenging journey. Over its 23-year history, the Flutie Foundation has distributed over $15 million to partner schools and organizations who provide clinical therapies, respite services, recreational programs, social skills training, job supports and more for people and families affected by autism. The Flutie Foundation also provides direct financial support to families through initiatives like education technology tools, adaptive camp scholarships, safety equipment, to provide immediate help where it's needed the most.
