My Story…
Our daughter Rowan has an intellectual disability which means for her entire life she’s going to be dependent on others for her care. While my wife and I are fortunate to be able to support her, there are many families in Ontario that struggle (financially, physically and emotionally) and need help.
Less than 6% of people with an intellectual disability are able to find suitable independent living, and families often fail to provide care for their child after they are gone.
I was pleased to join the advisory board of an organization called LIGHTS (http://www.lights.to/) last year that provides support and funding for families with an intellectually disabled child, so that their child can find a tailored independent living solution.
LIGHTS helps families by:
Connecting families with one another to expand social networks & reduce feelings of isolation
Facilitates navigation through a complex and bureaucratic system
Develops a plan for small group living arrangements & required support resources
Offers financial support (up to $20,000 per year for 5 years) & connects families to needed professionals
Description
Community Living Toronto fosters inclusive communities by supporting the rights and choices of people with an intellectual disability. We believe in a society where everyone belongs and is valued. Thank you for being part of teams #CLTO. Together we will raise important dollars for programs like LIGHTS (LIGHTS.to) – helping people with an intellectual disability reach their goals of a home of their own in their community; Shadow Lake Centre (shadowlakecentre.ca) – a place where children, youth and adults with special needs can experience the joys of camp and many other areas of greatest needs within or organization.
