The story is about why Illinois Deaf Campers (IDC), non-profit organization because of its beliefs by doing outdoor activities with families, children and friends, social and emotional supports and keep ASL tradition as yet is opened for all diversity and the communication modes for all Deaf, Hard of Hearing and DeafBlind children, plus hearing siblings of Hearing and Deaf parents. The IDC hosts the camping weekend, once or three times, including other fundraising activities each year, organized by board members, all of whom are Deaf adults. The IDC is the only organization which has been offering outdoor camping to families and friends since 2004. Anita Cervantes-Bowen has been the Director of IDC since 2014, and the only two long-time members of IDC, she and her husband Brent for 17 years. Anita works as a Guide By Your Side (GBYS) parent guide for 9 years and a board member of Illinois Hands and Voices (IHV). Someone has to consider all the great role models of Deaf adults (campers) who were once young children and know what it's like to grow up. They at camping show their support for the families and the children and do more outdoor activities during the camp weekend and worthy to have IHV and GBYS awareness and recognition. Anita is a grandmother with her grandson Jacob, who was born deaf, uses ASL and is enrolled in an early intervention program. Thanks to IHV and GBYS for having the type of services and resources for the families of DHHDB children.
