For participating in Cere-Bration Walk. Roll. Run

My Story:

I sustained a concussion in February 2019 and I was completely unprepared for how seriously it would impact me. Even though I had worked for many years caring for individuals with devastating traumatic brain injuries, I nonetheless had no experience with concussion or "mild TBI". I thought I'd be back to normal in a couple of weeks, after all, I didn't lose consciousness, I could walk and talk, I was discharged from the ER in a few hours and more than one neurologist told me that my CAT scan was normal so I hadn't sustained a brain injury. However, as the weeks and months went by and I began developing debilitating symptoms, it became clear that my brain had been injured and that this was not going to be a quick and straightforward recovery.

I was diagnosed with Post Concussion Syndrome which I'd never heard of before. It wasn't until over a year later that I was introduced to the Brain Injury Association of MA. Thanks to the education and advocacy of the BIA and the support groups it sponsors ( in particular, the Worcester Fairlawn Post Concussion Support Group) I was able to access the resources and support I needed to better understand and manage my diagnosis and to meet others experiencing the same thing. The organization helped me to navigate numerous challenges and without it my journey would have been an even lonelier and more difficult one. I will be eternally grateful for the help I received.

I consider myself extremely fortunate to be able to say that now, over two and a half years later, things have improved significantly for me but it's taken that long.  Although not completely symptom free, I am able to do most day to day activities without triggering extreme symptoms. This year I finally feel up to doing some fundraising for the BIA . I am planning to challenge myself and do a half marathon ( my first in 3 years). Any contribution, no matter how small, would be gratefully received. It is my hope that the BIA will continue to educate and support others affected by brain injury and continue to raise awareness about concussion. It is also my hope that others will benefit as much as I did from the resources the BIA has to offer. Needless to say, I have a brand new appreciation for this most miraculous organ called the brain which we take for granted on a daily basis.
