I am participating in this year's "Walk Run Wheel...or Whatever" event in memory of Jeff Iarusso who passed away in March 2019 at the age of 27 from a rare form of cancer (Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Sarcoma). From a young age, Jeff had an affinity for the word 'Legacy.' To no one's surprise, Jeff left an incredible legacy in his life. He taught (and continues to teach me) that small efforts can make a big difference and that life is all about the attitude you take on each day. It's the decisions and actions we take each day that help define the legacy we leave. I'm participating in this year's Walk/Run/Wheel with Wellwood to continue Jeff's legacy and support all of the other important people in our lives (and beyond) who have been affected by cancer.
Together, with the help of my family and friends, we will be attempting to collectively cover 91 km's in seven days. We picked 91 because it was the year Jeff was born. If you would like to participate, simply fill out the survey at the following link to let me know how many kilometers you hope to walk/run/wheel between October 16 – 24th: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdXHi8vejv-3HVald5dKz_59ZwCYMUt0Nl77BEtieEeDoZM5A/viewform?usp=sf_link
A few details:
• You can cover off your commitment in one day or break it up throughout the week, whatever you prefer,
• At the end of the week, you can let me know if you reached (or exceeded) your goal and I will send you a huge virtual high-five and massive thank you for taking part,
• I will keep a running tally of our collective commitments and send updates to all of you after the week,
• If you know someone else who would like to participate, please share this email and have them reach out!
If thirteen people committed to 1 km per day for seven days, we would reach our goal. If you are feeling ambitious and want to take on more than that, or if you have a few friends that would want to participate, we could easily crush this goal. Perhaps we could double it?
In addition to reaching the 91 kilometres, another important aspect of this event is to raise funds for Wellwood. As you can imagine, these are very challenging times for charities, especially those servicing the immunocompromised. Given that this is Wellwood's biggest fundraising event for the year, any donation you are able to provide would go a long way towards empowering those living with cancer in our community.
Maybe you would consider passing this challenge onto others - the more participation and awareness put towards the fundraiser the better. Maybe you could make it your own personal challenge that for every 1km you do, you will donate a certain number of dollars.
Regardless of the participation number, the dollar number can make a huge difference to Wellwood. If you feel inclined to donate (big or small), I would greatly appreciate your support. Together, we can make a difference for our community.
