My Story…
To me, it's all about fairness. I had access to a good education provided by the Canadian taxpayer, but there are many people in other parts of the world who don't have access to that, just because of where they were born and raised. So when I learned about Community Education Services, which provides scholarships to people who don't have access to free or low-cost education, I wanted to help.
CES focuses on helping young Kenyans who are from poor families, particularly those impacted by HIV/AIDS. We look for bright, ambitious people in particular, because they're most likely to benefit themselves and their families through the opportunities we provide.
I've been fortunate to be able to visit East Africa several times, and have come to know some of the students, Alumni of our program, teachers, principals, parents and others. Many of our students have gone on to careers in engineering, healthcare, education, business and other fields.
I'll be doing the Marathon in Kakamega, a city in western Kenya (and yes, I'm paying for my own travel expenses -- we're a very lean organization. I plan to join with some of our Alumni on October 1, in Kakamega, to do a 5-K speed-walk to raise funds for CES scholarships.
Your support will help us help more bright, ambitious young Kenyans achieve their dream of an education that helps their families and their community.
