Our story…
Running is as much about mental health as it is about physical and many describe it as a meditative-like experience. Unfortunately, not everybody has the ability to run or perhaps they just haven’t found a good outlet for dealing with things and result to less positive means like alcohol or bringing down those around them. The truth is, everybody, in some way, shape, or form, deals has to actively manage their mental health, just like their body. For that, organizations like CAMH are there, conducting world-leading research and providing resources.
Following the Ottawa race weekend in May, my partner, Chloe, and friend, Adrian, and I vowed to run the Toronto Waterfront half marathon with some lofty goals. We committed ourselves to running more (up to 65km in a given week), harder, and with more variety over the course of a 12-week training program. Unfortunately, around week 8 of training, Chloe started experiencing pain associated with an auto-immune condition, and fell off track with training. She’s had to bow out, which alone was a big toll, but has still continued to provide her coaching advice. For this half marathon race, I’ll be shooting to finish in 1.5 hrs (4:16 mins/km) and the run will be dedicated to her. Adrian will be gunning for < 1 hr 45 mins (4:56 mins/km).
