I’m excited to announce that I will be running in the Pittsburgh Marathon on Sunday, May 1^st in support of a cause that is very important to me, The Outlier Fund. The Outlier Fund was founded by my cousins, Harry and Dana Lorusso, who have been deeply affected by Glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer, and have created this fund to bring hope to those impacted by Glioblastoma through creating community, raising awareness and funds for impactful research.

To provide a little background on Harry’s personal story, one night in March 2019, Harry and his then fiancé (now wife), Dana, were cooking dinner at their house in Pittsburgh when Harry became sick. Harry went upstairs and his body started seizing. Dana rushed him to the emergency room where an MRI revealed a brain tumor. A biopsy shortly confirmed that Harry had stage 4 Glioblastoma – an aggressive and deadly tumor. Harry was 34 years old at the time of his diagnosis with a wedding only a few months away and a clean bill of health, having never been sick before.

Without hesitation, Harry and Dana moved their wedding up from June 22^nd to March 29^th, just eight days after Harry received his diagnosis. Shortly after, Harry began treatment at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, where he underwent surgery to remove the mass in his brain first and then enrolled in an aggressive clinical trial which consisted of twice-monthly doses of targeted radiation, six rounds of oral chemotherapy and intravenous immunotherapy every two weeks for a year.

While Harry is cancer free today, his fight is not over – he will continue to have brain scans every eight weeks for the rest of his life. Harry’s story is one of hope and inspiration. Against all odds, Harry is still here today and is using his time to contribute to the futures of those who will one day be diagnosed with Glioblastoma. Your contribution to the Outlier Fund could assist researchers and doctors with finding answers to this cancer that they weren’t able to provide to Harry. Today, Harry and Dana continue to live their life to the fullest, and welcomed their beautiful baby boy, Wylie Lucas Lorusso, on July 2, 2021.
