My Story…
As a Child Life Specialist at UPMC CHP I have the privilege of providing psychosocial support to pediatric patients as they navigate life changing illness and injury in Radiology and Radiation Oncology. Many of the interventions, activities, and coping tools I am able to utilize are because of generous donations through the Children’s Hospital Foundation so I am running this half marathon for them! I have a view of the hospital from the start of the trail I run on and often dedicate my runs to a patient I’ve worked with and try to channel a small bit of the resilience they demonstrate. I will be thinking of them on race day and hope to contribute a small amount back to the kids who teach me so much more than I could hope to in return! Description
As part of Team Children's, my participation in the 2022 Pittsburgh Marathon supports UPMC Children's Hospital Foundation.
Funds support the patients and families served by UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Last year UPMC Children's Hospital had over 1 million patient visits and many of the programs, initiatives, and resources that make UPMC Children’s so special are funded by philanthropic gifts. Things like distraction therapy which provides patients something else to focus on during their medical procedures, the Child Life Department which provides many activities to create a sense of normalcy for hospitalized children, and the Free Care Fund which covers the cost of medical care for those that cannot afford it. These areas are not covered by insurance, yet are critically important to helping families face the many challenges that accompany a child’s treatment.
