My Story…
I am incredibly excited and extremely grateful to be challenging myself to do something new and uncomfortable and to raise money for a charity that has a huge impact on families across BC and the Yukon, like ours, caring for children with life-limiting illnesses.
My son, Chase, was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) type 1 when he was 7 months old and given a life expectancy of only 24 months. SMA is a genetic condition that causes muscle weakness and atrophy and affects a child's ability to crawl, walk, sit up, and control their own head movements, as well as causing severe damage to the muscles used for breathing and swallowing. As a result, Chase is completely dependent on his wheelchair and others for his care and support.
Chase spent a large percentage of his childhood in and out of ICU fighting for his life and overcoming challenges no child should ever have to face, including spinal surgery at the tender age of 5. My son is a fighter and through his strength, determination and support from friends, family, BC Children's Hospital and Canuck Place, he is thriving at the incredible age of 20 years old!
I am choosing to participate in this year's half marathon not only to challenge and push myself way beyond my comfort zone, but also to make my son proud and raise money for Canuck Place as a small gesture of thank you for everything they have done to support our family <3
