George Floyd Global Memorial

Raise money for George Floyd Global Memorial

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd was murdered at the hands of the Minneapolis Police Department. At theintersection of 38th Street E and Chicago Avenue S (George Floyd Square) in Minneapolis, MN, people comefrom all over the world to stand in solidarity for racial justice, express their pain and hope, and pay respect to thenames of people who died unjust deaths at what has become a site of pilgrimage for many. The George Floyd Global Memorial (GFGM) was established to bring together members of George Floyd's family and the local community to preserve the offerings left as creative expressions of pain and hope by the people. Our cultural heritage preservation work keeps the stories of the community alive so that they are remembered and used as educational resources for generations to come.

"We Will Heal Us" is our theme this year. Not only is running healing, but so are the offerings we get to re-exhibit for the people and the job opportunities we provide for youth.

This summer, we launched our first Cultural Heritage Preservation Internship program which allowed three black youth to explore cultural heritage preservation work through hands-on archiving, art conservation, and exhibition experiences. By exposing more black youth to an industry where our culture is significantly underrepresented, we expand imaginations for future career paths. Stop by the Pillsbury House and Theater (3501 Chicago Ave S, Minneapolis, MN) to view the culminating exhibit of the 2022 interns, which they named, "Feels the Most." Here, you can read their personal statements on the impact of the internship program and view a sample of their fantastic cultural heritage preservation accomplishments.

Your contribution will help us expand our internship program and exhibition opportunities to lift up the voices of our youth. Every $4000 raised provides a full summer internship experience for one young person, which includes paid work, uniforms, public transportation support, field trips, and professional mentors in the fields of archiving, art conservation, and exhibition. Additional funds raised will support our upcoming exhibits like "Voices of the Unheard" our 2023 exhibit that will engage youth-selected offerings. Help us give young people work experiences that they will remember for the rest of their lives because they get to work in pursuit of racial justice.
