My Story…
I had lived in my new home in Minneapolis for a month when an MPD Officer lynched George Floyd within a block of my home. In all that followed, one of the most deeply meaningful things for me personally has been the opportunity to assist with caretaking (as both a neighbor and an art conservator) of some of the thousands of offerings left by visitors, mourners, and pilgrims to George Floyd Square over the last 2+ years. This has all been facilitated through George Floyd Global Memorial.
GFGM is also working to help train the next generation of museum professionals, offering well-paid internships for Black youth at all levels to gain experience with caring for cultural materials and telling their stories as archives and conservation interns.
