BeaverTails Ottawa Ice Dragon Boat Festival
February 11-12, 2022
BeaverTails Ottawa Ice Dragon Boat Festival is the largest ice dragon boat race in the world! The event provides a unique experience that combines dragon boating with Canadian winter sport culture. Once a year the races take place on the Rideau Canal Skateway at Dows Lake, where twelve-person boats get equipped with skate-like blades and competitors propel themselves along the course using spiked ice-picks.
New this year are IDB1’s, which are single-person “dragon boats”, affectionately named after the sport that inspired their development. Try them outdoors at the Lansdowne Skating Rink and indoors at the TD Place Arena. In 2023 Ottawa will host the first IDB1 World Championships.
Check out the races or try the IDB1’s on February 12 and enjoy free concerts at the Rainbow Bistro in the Byward Market from February 4-21.
Due to the ongoing pandemic the festival will also challenge participants to earn a commemorative medal in the Conquer the Capital virtual challenge. Registrants can skate, ski, snowshoe, walk or run, from any location in the world, for a cumulative distance of 21k to be completed over the duration of an iconic Canadian tradition…Winterlude!
