Why AutismBC moves me...
It's that time of year again - take a look at my Charity Challenge profile below and help me reach my $350 goal! I plan be walking 5km with my friend and co-worker Jake Anthony. All donation dollars go directly towards AutismBC Meets Program. I have donated $25 to myself if you can please match my donation to help me reach my goal.
If you cant donate
1) Join me on June 26 for a walk + talk in Vancouver
2) If you are from outside of Vancouver you can do the virtual run! Which I did last year with Holly!
3) Last thing to do to show support is to check out the RaceRoser and see how many people are choosing to run for AutismBC. Reading stories from the community are really powerful. And as our board member and autistic advice, Lucas says "Sharing my Story can Help Others" reading the story and reason for the support is my favorite part of this peer-to-peer fundraiser.
About AutismBC Meets:
Last year our team and I hosted over 140 AutismBC Meets – which are community support groups – as a way to expand our support services. There is such a need to have safe non-judgmental spaces for connection and places that people are able to ask questions, share what support services are working for you, and listen to others. This was 3x the number of support groups we hosted the previous year.
As an ally to the autism community I am one of the few people on our small team who does not have a child on the autism spectrum or who is not autistic themselves.
I am often asked why then do I work with AutismBC?
I value this community;
I value my team and the work that they do to empower, support, and connect the autism community across BC;
and I really value the conversations we host.
Autism in BC
-1 IN 32 CHILDREN between the ages of 6-18 receive an autism diagnosis. -There are approximately 60,000-100,000 people on the autism spectrum in BC.
-Many people on the autism spectrum can go undiagnosed until later in life.
-The autistic adult population is vastly under-supported across BC.
