My Story…

My story begins with my  father-in-law and late Grandmother...

My Father-in-law, Malcolm, had a stroke in October 2008, he was 58 years old. I knew him for 6 months prior to the event happening. He was home with his wife and high school aged daughter at the time, who called 911 because they knew the signs of a stroke. He spent time in an ICU and remaining care in a rehabilitation facility until he was able to receive care directly at home. Malcolm went from being fiercely independent, working, driving, going, going; to having everything done for him. It was very difficult in the beginning for everyone in his family. Navigating his medical needs, learning about his type of stroke, and overcoming the challenges it brought. Though, it has been almost 14 years, Malcolm has learned to live with his limitations, yet continues to laugh and embrace who he is today. During the thick of it all, my mother-in-law, Karen, is an amazing care giver. She altered her home, work, and personal life/needs in order to adapt to what her loving husband needed for care. It has been a team effort to bring them this far and they do it well together.

My late Grandmother, Lorraine, had a stroke in 2015 one week before I graduated from nursing school. She was a registered nurse as well and my inspiration to return to school to become a nurse. She had been out to lunch and had stroke when returning home.  At the time, she was 83 years old when it happened. She spent weeks in rehabilitation facilities with her daughter by her side, learning how to go about daily routines that were once mindless tasks.

Seeing how strong my Grandmother was during all the ups and downs of her recovery was motivating. She lived her life happily no matter the difficult challenges of her recovery. Lorraine overcame and continued to be happy. Always smiling even though I knew some days were harder than other days. She was a woman that made everyone laugh and feel loved.

These two people I run for. I am dedicating my 7 miles to Malcolm and my Gramma <3
