Inspired by the Boston Marathon runners (but with the acknowledgement that I am definitely more of a dancer than a runner), I have decided to sign up for the 2022 Falmouth Road Race!! I will be running for Be Like Brit, a non-profit organization that is close to my heart. In 2018 I was lucky enough to be chosen as one of 12 students to travel to Grand Goave, Haiti with the Holy Cross Immersion Program. BLB was started by the parents of Britney Gengel after she passed away in the 2010 earthquake while serving the children of Haiti. Brit's Home is an orphanage for 66 children that lost their parents during the same earthquake. The mission of Be Like Brit is "to continue the compassion of Britney Gengel by serving the children of Haiti through sustaining a safe, nurturing home rooted in the virtues of Faith, Hope and Love while developing a sense of social responsibility, community involvement and unconditional love." During my time in Haiti with Be Like Brit, I was inspired and filled with immense gratitude for being able to step into the lives of the 66 children at Brit's Home for such a short amount of time; I learned about the resilience of the children and country of Haiti all while learning so much about myself. Running for this organization will continue to keep the memories and lessons from this trip close to my heart as I prepare to return to school for pediatric nursing, with the hope of returning to Haiti as a Medical Britionary in the coming years.
