My Story…
This year I will be running the Falmouth Road Race in honor of Ted Hannon and the Hannon Foundation. Like most people who grew up in Norton Massachusetts, my life was positively impacted by Ted.
I have struggled to write this post because what I can say about Ted Hannon as a person in one post wouldn’t do him any justice.
With that being said, I will share one of my favorite stories in an attempt to encapsulate who he was:
By the end of High School, I had practically lived at the Hannon’s. I remember getting laughed at by Eddie and his brother Pat for not being able to eat the two sandwiches their mother Laurie made for lunch every day.
Nevertheless, Ted comes home after his usual 12-hour day and asked if I wanted to go to a Celtics game because they had an extra ticket. (I had never been) I could tell you the story ends there and that it was court side seats and one of the best nights I had as a young man. However, what I truly remember is what happened trying to park the car. Getting into Boston was a pain, parking worse, and to top it off you just worked a long day. We parked right next to the Garden. Guy comes up and says it’s $40. Ted had a moment. He didn’t yell or anything, you could just tell he was thinking. He paid the $40 and on the way in I remember the question was asked why we didn’t just drive around for cheaper parking.
Ted answered: “I could’ve drove around for parking and paid less money. I could’ve also gotten into a car accident while doing so. I could’ve let an extra $20 make me angry and ruin a good night. I paid the extra money for peace of mind. Time is more important than money. “
RIP Ted. I hope you knew how much you impacted people’s lives for the better.
