My Story…

San Fernando Valley Juneteenth Committee

2022 Celebration

Theme:  Commemoration  -  Celebration  -  Continuation:

Commemoration:   Remembering those here and across this nation who committed themselves in the forward struggle for Freedom, Justice and Equality not only for black folks, but for each and every American.

“If we have the courage and tenacity of our forebears, who stood firmly like a rock against the lash of slavery, we shall find a way to do for our day what they did for theirs.”    - Mary McLeod Bethune

Celebration:  While we have Black History Month and Now Juneteenth is a Federal Holiday.  It is important to teach and celebrate as bench marks the many accomplishments and contributions Black Folk have made to the development of this nation and the world, as we continue the forward motion as a people and nation, in the quest for a more perfect union.

“We celebrate this day, too, for the very good reason that we have no other to celebrate.  English emancipation has one advantage over American emancipation.  Hers has a definite anniversary.  Ours has none.  Like our slaves, the freedom of the negro has no birthday.  No man can tell the day of the month, or the month of the year, upon which slavery was abolished in the United States.  We cannot even tell when it began to be abolished.  Like the movement of the sea, no man can tell where one wave begins and another ends.”   Frederick Douglass

3.  Continuation:  Maintaining that which has been achieved and building on the solid foundation laid by those who came before us.  We must always remember the struggle is an continuing effort, The struggle for “True Freedom, Justice and Equal” in America and around the world continues.  It is up to each of us individually and corporately to continue the forward progress to establish and ensure “True Freedom, Justice and Equal.” for all.

"Those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the roar of its many waters"  Fredrick Douglass

"A People without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots."   Marcus Garvey

"History is a people's memory, and without a memory, man is demoted to the lower animals."   Malcolm X
