My Story…
I will be participating in Wellwood's Walk Run Wheel this year as part of team "Liv Out Loud", honouring the memory of our beloved Olivia Smosarski. She ran this race every year with her family growing up.
This year, I am also participating in honour of Jill Axisa. She was a part of our lives since I came into this world. Her absence will be felt hard by all of us. Thank you Jill for your contributions to our lives, and to the community. You will be missed deeply and often.
In the lovely words of my mom:
"We were friends for 37 years and every moment of it was an adventure. When she got her first diagnosis, I shaved my own head in sisterhood and solidarity. When I told her I was going to throw myself out of an airplane, she jumped with me. When I thought her marathons were inconceivable, suddenly I found myself running them too.The diagnosis of a second (unrelated and incurable) cancer left us reeling. She crossed the finish line of what she called her "last marathon" on September 29.Jill asked me to write her obituary. I sure hope I did ok: https://www.circleoflifecbc.com/obituaries/Jill-Axisa/... She chose Wellwood as one of the charities to receive memorial donations, was a longtime supporter of the centre's work, and volunteered regularly at this annual event.In honour of my magnificent, fearless, brave, brilliant and beautiful friend, I am going to walk, jog, hike -- or crawl -- 100 km this month. Cancer is already isolating. No one should have to go through it alone.
Even now that we are able to gather again, Wellwood has emerged as a hybrid of in-person and virtual offerings. This new direction allows Wellwood to meet the needs of those who are unable to come to our physical spaces – whether that is due to geography, mobility, caregiving responsibilities, feeling too unwell to travel, or even having made the decision to continue the practice of physical distancing for personal safety.
Thousands of people in our community are still living with cancer right now. Most face serious illness and many are immune compromised, which makes the current crisis all the more difficult to cope with and navigate.
They need our support now, more than ever.
