My Story…
I am running the Flying Pig Half Marathon in May and I am running to raise funds for an agency that is near and dear to my heart, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cincinnati. I am the Chief Program Officer at the agency and get to see first hand, the impact mentoring has on youth in our service region. In 2022, the agency served 804 children with a mentor to increase their academic performance, reduce depressive symptoms, reduce juvenile justice involvement and much more.
The definition of a Mentor is an experienced and trusted advisor. My father was my first and greatest mentor for me in my life. He passed away when I was a senior in high school but was able to show me tools I would need later in life. This was a very difficult time for me with graduating from high school and going off to college very shortly after. I had to remember all the things he showed and taught me over the years to be the best person and work towards success. His actions as a husband, father and person were things I needed to see to know what kind of father and husband I wanted to be. He was all things that a mentor is! Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cincinnati offers BIG Futures programming to support youth in the greater Cincinnati area the tools needed to support college and career readiness.
I have since then had many great professional mentors as my social work career developed. I have worked with youth and families in the community extensively and understand the importance of positive role models/mentors in children's lives to allow them to reach their full potential. As a therapist, I saw first hand from youth as they were transitioning from therapy services that a mentor would be a valuable tool for them in their journey for success. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cincinnati offers that service to youth. The agency has a great team of staff to support the Bigs (volunteers) and the Littles (children)/Parent and guardians with resources to be most successful and Defend their Potential! Please consider donating to this cause to support the children in the Greater Cincinnati area.
I chose a goal of $1,500 because that is the cost to support a match (Big and Little) for an entire year. Help me reach my goal!!
