My Story…
I will never forget the day my sister, Megan, and a few of our friends took me out for my 33rd birthday. We went to one of our favorite places, Maggies. After we sat down, she looked at me and said “I feel like I have cancer. My bones just hurt.”
A few weeks later, we were supposed to go to our friends baby shower together. That morning, she told me she doesn’t think she can make it because she wasn’t feeling well and she could barely stand because she was in so much pain.
Later that night, she went to urgent care. After being discharged, she got a call from the doctor saying there are lesions on her ribs. She kept asking me what it means and what she should do. My heart sank. I knew what it was but I couldn’t find it in myself to tell her. The only thing I could do was advise her to go to the hospital.
I knew it was cancer but I didn’t know to what extent. I didn’t want to believe it. I still can’t believe it. Megan was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer at the age of 34. How? Why? She has a beautiful family. This can’t be happening. But it was.
Megan fought so hard for so long, but she lost her battle to this terrible disease last March. Through all of her pain and suffering, she was always in good spirits. Ever since we were little, I have always looked up to her. She was, and still is my inspiration.
I started running less than two years ago. Some people call me “selfish”, but it seems to be one of the only things that relieves stress for me. It gives me the time I need to just think. Last year, I ran my first full marathon. It was the worst run of my life, but knowing I was doing it for a good cause made it all worth it in the end. This year will be different. I will get to run alongside our good friend Megan McCall. I raised close to $1000 for the American Association for Cancer Research last year and was hoping to exceed that goal this year. Thank you for consideration and taking the time to read my story.
