I Run to Cure CF!
Hello all! My name is Lindsey Soxman and I am a mother to 3 beautiful daughters and married to my high school sweetheart. My daughter Natalie was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis before she was even born. Her diagnosis was a big shock to our entire family since there was no known family history. Ever since we found out about her CF diagnosis, we have made it a point as a family to stay active and set a good example for Natalie. In hopes that she will follow and stay as healthy and strong as she can be!
My husband Doug signed up for his first marathon 10 years ago and has ran one each year in honor of Natalie which is so incredible to me. A marathon is something that has been in the way way way back of my mind since he ran his first one. However, I just never seemed to have the courage to sign up. I have ran two half marathons and been a part of relay teams as well. But, I always ended up injured. My body just doesn't seem to like running. But, as much as it doesn't seem to like running, it surely is capable of doing hard things. Just like Natalie is capable of doing hard things, all while having Cystic Fibrosis!
Since I've never had the courage to sign up for a marathon, Doug took that in his own hands and did it for me. Therefore, this May 6th, I will attempt to run my very first marathon with Doug by my side smiling while I will surely be struggling. Although, I am sure there will be a good bit of walking, and limping, I will be channeling my inner Natalie the entire time to keep myself going and get to that finish line.
As Natalie grows older and starts to understand more about her CF, she has been going through some really tough times emotionally. Although, she has been so healthy this year, she has had to make many sacrifices to be that way. Natalie has worn her mask to school every day since they were allowed back. It is emotionally draining to her, but her doctor believes that it is the best way to keep her safe. Recently, she got covid for the first time. This was very difficult for her, emotionally, and physically. Her symptoms were very mild thankfully, but it truly spiked her anxiety and worries about dying. Being isolated really took a toll on her and her thoughts got the best of her. This only motivates me more to give it my all so that she doesn't have to feel this way anymore.
Many amazing drugs and treatments have come through the pipeline for Cystic Fibrosis over the years and it is all thanks to generous donations and people! In fact, Natalie was able to stop doing one of her daily treatments because of being on the fantastic drug Trikafta. Hopefully, in the years to come, she will be able to continue to delete treatments from her long list and slowly begin to feel like the "normal" kid she's always saying she wants to be.
Since my confidence in finishing this marathon is lacking, please help me to feel a bit better by donating any amount you can. Every dollar really does count! It will help give me the boost to keep training and working through the pain. I am proud to be a part of helping everyone with CF get closer to a cure. Thank you!!
Description
Cystic fibrosis is a rare, genetic disease found in about 40,000 people in the U.S. causing persistent lung infections and limiting the ability to breath over time. Those living with this disease are moms, dads, sisters, brothers, daughters, sons, friends, and co-workers --all struggling each day just to breathe and live normal, healthy lives.
While there has been significant progress in treating this disease, there is still no cure and too many lives are cut far too short. By participating in the Pittsburgh Marathon on behalf of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, I run to help add tomorrows to the lives of all people living with cystic fibrosis today. Please make a difference and support me by donating to my fundraising campaign today!
Then please consider joining the team! For more information - reach out to Fallon DeRiggi - fderiggi@cff.org
