My Story…
In August of 2019, our family lost one of our shining stars. My grandmother, or to me GG for Grandma Grace. However, GG’s light had slowly been fading for a while, years in fact as she suffered from Dementia. Most of the good and meaningful memories I have of GG are from my younger years. In fact, she played a huge role in my childhood and looking back at old photos and reminiscing of days long ago she was always there.
I believe dementia reveals the true essence of a person. It strips away all the layers of etiquette and social cues that most of us have learned over the years. With dementia, what you see is what you get. There is no filter. Who GG was in her final years of life is who she really was and that is a genuine, cheery, loving and caring sole. She welcomed everyone with a warm smile and her southern charm. In the summer of 2018, I got married and while it was a beautiful day it was a little HOT and our wedding was outside at the Country Club; a place I went many times as a young girl with GG. As the family was gathering around for pictures, there was GG making light of the heat even though she was in a woman’s suite telling us all she brought the southern weather to us. She always saw the glass half-full.
GG taught me many things throughout my life, but in her final years she showed me that life is a “continuous process of adjustments”. I remembered that line so much I wrote it down after sitting with her one day. How you view the situation/adjustment has everything to do with the process of life.
On May 7th, I will be running the Pittsburgh ½ marathon in memory of GG and to raise awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Association of PA. I am asking for your support to help me get to the finish line. Each dollar raised will go directly to the Alzheimer’s Association, which provides consultation, information and referral, and support programs to families in need.
Donate to help MEGAN raise money for 2023 DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend’s fundraising campaign.
