My Story…
This year, I've chosen to run for the Homeless Children's Education Fund, a nonprofit organization that supports the educational needs of Allegheny County youth experiencing homelessness.
I run for students like Nate, a high school junior who thrived in HCEF's most recent curriculum addition: Teen CEO (Career Exploration Opportunity).
During the height of the pandemic, Nate was facing housing instability. School was Nate's safe haven and refuge that provided him community, support, and protection. But while in quarantine, Nate had no where to turn. This grueling period of isolation had a severe impact on Nate and his mental health.
As part of the Teen CEO program, Nate began his paid internship with Black Tea Brown Suga in McKees Rocks, a local media development company.
Nate was given a second chance through HCEF and flourished during his internship! He assembled many projects, designed signage, and even worked on a legal application to create a brand new charity!
The Teen CEO program eliminates all barriers students may have in gaining real-world work experience. HCEF connects its students directly with local businesses, pays each student an hourly wage for 8 hours of internship & 4 hours of skills training. Additionally, HCEF also provides students with bus passes, money to purchase professional wear, as well as breakfast and lunch.
There were a reported 3,212 children and youth who were identified as homeless by the Allegheny County school district. Each and every one of these children has enormous, intrinsic value and unique perspectives & talents.
As HCEF continues to elevate and enhance educational programs available to our youth, we need your help!!!
As you consider donating, you'll be making an investment in an overlooked area-- youth homelessness-- while protecting and creating opportunities for students like Nate.
