Help Steven raise money

For participating in 2023 DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend

My Story…

In December of 2015, at 33 years old, I was just finding my stride in life, running marathons and feeling stronger than I ever have. I had a career that I loved and a partner I was planning on proposing to. My whole life ahead of me.

On December 21st I received a call that no one ever wants to get. The doctor let me know that my recent  biopsy came back confirming that I had Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma (Thyroid Cancer). My life came to a screeching halt. The next few months were a blur, filled with scans, doctors visits, surgery and treatment. In 2016 I gained well over 100 lbs while my endocrinologist worked to balance out my thyroid levels. I felt broken and hopeless.

One day, through a random encounter, I met Stephanie Samlovich. She let me know that she started a support group for young adults affected by cancer, and I wasn't alone in my journey. The organization, called Young Adult Survivors United (YASU), focused on providing support to anyone diagnosed with cancer between the ages of 18 and 40. The first night I went to a group meeting, I knew my life was changed. I met people who understood the unique challenges that no young adult should have to face. YASU truly saved my life and gave me a safe space to open up, break down and heal with the support of a community that loves each other fiercely.

With the support in place and finding a gym community (Mecka Fitness) that constantly motivates and inspires me, I have been able to focus on getting stronger and healthier. This year I am returning to run the Pittsburgh Half Marathon and raising money to give back to the organization/community that has given so much to me. Please considering donating to help YASU continue its amazing work!

About YASU YASU has the largest community in Western PA for young adult cancer survivors and their co-survivors (with virtual programming outreached on a national level), providing us with the ability to cope and thrive from emotional, social and financial support under professional guidance and with peers who understand and can relate.
