My Story…
Thank you so much for checking out our donation page!
My wife Kortney and I are both missionaries that serve on the North Side of Pittsburgh with Urban Impact. Living in the community in which we serve, our goal is to create not just relationships with our community, but to create effective followers of Christ.
Over a year ago now, my wife and I committed to discipling a student of Urban Impact's: Dre. Dre is a football player, and someone we have continued to pour into, teaching him about Jesus and what the gospel means for his life.
After watching my wife run a marathon last year, Dre was inspired. Growing up in the North Side, Dre has had a heart to give back to his community, and is always looking for ways to challenge himself.
This year, Dre has committed to run a 5k on the Saturday of the marathon weekend.
Being a football player, Dre is entirely new to long distance running. What he sees though is the opportunity to discipline himself to training, while also raising money that will go back into the community and ministry that helped develop him into the young man he is today.
The training that will go into this creates an incredible opportunity for us to disciple Dre even further.
If we know anything from Jesus' model of discipleship, we know He spent an incredible amount of time with His disciples. For us, this training gives us opportunities to help connect the dots for Dre: Why do we raise money for missions? What does it mean to commit your life to Christ? How do we learn to look outside of ourselves in humility for the sake of furthering the gospel? How can we effectively serve our community? What does it mean to lay down your life for others? Why is it so important that YOU have to want the work of the Lord in your life?
With so all the training that goes into running a 5k, we are so excited to see how God is going to develop Dre in this season as a follower of Him, and are blessed to be a part of this work. For us, it's more than just running—it's coming alongside one of our students to not only help him accomplish this tangible goal, but to also teach him about the heart of the Father in order to be more like Jesus in his community.
While Dre will have successfully completed a 5k by the end of Marathon Weekend, the impact on his life will be much more than simply gaining a medal.
This is my reason for running: To continue to disciple students in the North Side with Urban Impact, that we might see God's kingdom expanded in this area... One mile at a time.
