My Story…
At age 46, John experienced a stroke that caused weakness in one side of his body—making it hard to perform everyday activities like walking, speaking, or dressing. After his stroke, John used a foot ankle brace, a walker, and a cane but was highly motivated to improve his mobility to do more for himself and his family.
John received some stroke rehabilitation in the hospital before being referred to ARBI. John attended virtual seated exercise classes and worked diligently on his physical, occupational, and speech therapy programs at ARBI and at home. With his hard work and encouragement from his family, John increased his speech clarity and walking endurance, became less reliant on his cane, and no longer needed a walker.
With a new sense of independence, John now uses his electric scooter to attend ARBI’s weekly Walking Group and is registered for his first marathon! John said he is walking 5KM in the Calgary Marathon Charity Challenge because “ARBI is like family to me, and walking is a good form of exercise. It helps clear my mind when I am stressed.”
