Why I'm Running...

I am running for Roland and all the residents at Perley Health,

Mr Roland Lalonde, who moved into Perley Health in 2021, has rediscovered his love of painting. At the age of 99 years young, Roland mounted an exhibition of his paintings in Perley Health’s art gallery near the studio. “The staff here are excellent,” says Roland. “I’ve had a hell of a life. I don’t move around as well as I used to and my eyes are bad, but I feel incredibly lucky to still have my health and to be able to see my family regularly.”

Roland joined the Forces in November 1942, bowing to peer pressure, as the clerk typist in the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps, Roland saw the tide of the Second World War turning; the Allies had won in North Africa and the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union had stalled at Stalingrad. “My mother was not happy that I enlisted,” says Roland, “but I don’t think that many mothers are happy when a son enlists.” All seven of Roland’s brothers served, although he was the only one to see combat. While Roland Lalonde has witnessed dramatic changes during his 99 years—“from buggies and Model Ts to electric cars,” as he likes to say—close family ties have remained constant. Today, he has 11 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Every Saturday, two of his daughters and one of his sons take him out to breakfast, usually in the company of a grandchild or tow, and often a few great grandchildren.

Money raised by runners and walkers supports exceptional care for Seniors and Veterans. While government funding provides for adequate care, events like Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend helps to raise the bar and ensure that Seniors and Veterans have every opportunity to enjoy healthy, fulfilling, and dignified lives.

Perley Health is a community where over 600 Seniors and Veterans thrive – from independent living to long-term care. Each resident is supported with a person and family-centric approach to the continuum of care to improve not only their physical well-being their mental and emotional health too.
