Hi!
My name is Tess Thalissa Ruel and I will run a half-marathon in support of the Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre. 

The lack of action and accountability from institutions explains, among other reasons, why Sexual Assault (SA) is the most underreported crime in Canada. The aftermath of the traumatic event of sexual violence reveals that survivors have long term effects throughout their life.

As you may or may not know the process to press charges or even just to report the crime is not only a difficult task but also has devastating effects on the survivor’s mental and psychological health. Some would describe the process as a second rape.
As our system is failing us, there is a real need to support survivors through those specialized centre such as Ottawa Rape crisis centre, which can ensure them the right support they need (crisis support, counselling, service navigation,etc.) This is your opportunity among others to help and make a difference!

As long as perpetrators can perpetrate their crimes without fear of prosecution or punishment, the cycle of violence will not be broken.
Last but not least, our schools’ sex education need to be updated in order to implement the importance of sexual consent and having a more transparent discussion about sex for better awareness, safety and prevention purposes.
Our people, especially those who are at a higher risk (Youth, Indigenous women and girls, people with disability and LGBTQ+ ) deserve to prosper in a safe environment and better educated society!
