Notre histoire…
We choose to donate to Big Brothers Big Sisters Ottawa and support this charity because the studies show that for every $1 invested in childhood mentoring results in $3 back to the community in the future (as these kids are more likely to go to university, get good paying jobs, volunteer themselves). It's just a good return on investment into our future.
However, I listened to a podcast a few weeks ago, and I think this number is grossly underestimated. Nadine Burke Harris specializes in how childhood trauma impacts health across a lifetime. Children with 4 or more ACEs (adverse childhood experiences) have a shockingly higher chance of contracting 7/10 leading causes of death in the United States and a 20 year difference in life expectancy. And all it takes is ONE person who cares for these children to reverse some of these negative lifelong impacts. One person, such as a mentor, and the services that BBBSO provides.
I'm running a 5k in the Tamarack Ottawa Race weekend on May 27th, and I’m running for Big Brothers Big Sisters Ottawa. If you have capacity to give, I would love it if you would donate to my Team. Any amount is better than no amount. If everyone donated $5, I would meet my goal of $500 no problem. If everyone donated $10, then I would raise $1,000 and that would support a match for a full year!
