My Story…
In 2017 my father received a heart transplant due to a gene called LMNA. While staying with my father in Palo Alto after his surgery I found out that I inherited the gene from him. My grandfather died at the age of 63 when I was 13 years old. Three years later my uncle would pass at the age of 40. We later discovered both of their deaths, including other family members were due to this gene. I received a pacemaker and defibrillator at 39 years old and found out that all three of my daughters also have LMNA. I was scared and worried but also found comfort in the fact that they are cared for by Stanford. Stanford saved my father’s life, they are saving my life, and I believe that they will save my children’s life.
I am honored to be one of the individuals selected as a Heart Hero this year. I am passionate about being a lead facilitator with the DCM/HCM Support group for the Stanford Center for Inherited Cardiovascular Disease. I want to help and encourage others to live their best life and provide support for those who need it. This is a picture of my father, Brad Ruble, my 3 daughters Neila, Gia and Hailey and myself holding a picture of my late Uncle Mark. They are what inspired me to begin this journey. We are proud to say that we live fully with heart disease!
