My Story…

My involvement with dyslexia started when my son entered JK. I noticed he was not interested in learning his sight words or even colouring. After speaking with his teacher about what I noticed, she said she noticed the same thing. And so I started to do research into what dyslexia was. It wasn't until my son was in 4th grade that we finally got the diagnosis of a 'phonological processing disorder.' The psychologist told us that it was dyslexia but she couldn't put that term in her report because it was not used in the school board. He was very lucky to have had some amazing teachers who did their very best to support his learning with the tools they had available. His struggles with reading and writing did not improve, though, and he learned to depend heavily on technology to assist him through school.

I recently started to work for Dyslexia Canada in January of this year. One of the main reasons I accepted this position is because I want to affect change in our schools in Canada so that kids like him don't have the same struggles, which often contribute to mental health difficulties. We can now use the term dyslexia in schools. Dyslexia Canada's mission to ensure every child in Canada gets a fair and equitable education falls directly in line with my core beliefs. It is unacceptable that any child (or their teachers) should not have access to the resources that have been available for decades and will benefit all learners. Your support of this charity will help us continue to pressure our governments and school board administrators to ensure that teachers and children have access to these resources and support parents and educators. No child should feel like they aren't smart just because they learn things differently.
