We are racing for research
My wife and I were expecting our second baby end of June 2022. It was during her 19th week scan that we found she had a short cervix, putting her pregnancy at high risk. Mount Sinai Hospital was the only place that had the sophistication to support babies born 22 weeks and after. The odds of survival at 22 weeks were less than 25%. With a lot of back and forth between home, hospital and hotel stays for proximity to Mount Sinai, our second son was born in March 2022 at 24 weeks and 4 days of gestation weighing 670g (~1.5 pounds). The statistical odds of survival had improved but he still had to go through a variety of breathing challenges. He received top notch care at Mount Sinai Hospital's Level 3 NICU. We spent 72 days there and the next 43 days at the Level 2 NICU in Brampton Civic Hospital before coming home on the 27th June 2022! We did not miss a single day visiting him in the evening after work, spending time with him, caring for him before returning home after midnight! None of our return journeys used to be the same. Some days, we'd feel hopeful than the other! What kept us going was our faith, our unshakeable resolve in doing whatever it took to provide him un-divided attention, our trust in the healthcare system, the nurses, doctors and the healthcare technology that made it possible! and more importantly, the support from our 8 year old first son and our family. It was then, that I started thinking of a way to give back! I had started running as a way to boost mental health and that quickly provided a much needed indulgence, a way to not only improve my physical and mental health but through running, generate awareness to Sinai Health Foundation and Mount Sinai Hospital without whom, we could not have imagined brining our son home in good health! I ran my first 5K in October 2022 and now planning a half marathon this year at Toronto Waterfront Marathon on 15th Oct 2023.I am proud to be running for this cause and I welcome any donations which will fully go to the Sinai Health Foundation.
Description
This year, we are racing for the future to support the ground breaking research that takes place at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute (LTRI), part of Sinai Health.
Funds raised will help fuel world-leading research to help push the boundaries of science and advance our collective understanding of human biology in health and disease. We hope you'll support our team or join us by registering yourself!
