Lighthouse School

The Lighthouse School (LHS) is a Cayman Islands government primary and secondary school that caters specifically to students who have moderate to profound special education needs including students on the autism spectrum.  The school was founded in 1976, and today is recognised as one of the best schools in the Cayman Islands and the region. In recent years the school has had a period of rapid expansion and change. In 2023 the enrollment is 120 students age 5 to 18.

Although all school-related programmes are government funded, the Lighthouse School students require a lot more to get through the school day.  Many families who care for children with special needs struggle with the financial burden that goes along with it, including things like special medical equipment and care, various therapy sessions not covered by insurance companies, special dietary requirements and feeding tubes as well as daily sanitary products such as diapers and wipes, which some children will require throughout their school journey.  

All funds raised from the Walkers Cayman Islands Marathon will be placed in a special “Lighthouse School Community Fund”, and utilised to buy diapers, wipes, sanitary products, deodorant and washing products for use at school, and at home where necessary.  This will lighten the huge cost parents and caretakers currently have to incur due to the rising costs of hygiene products, and ensure that every child in need will have access to items not always readily available.  As the fund grows, the school will also be able to utilise the funding in support of emergencies such as hurricanes, fires and other natural disasters where Lighthouse School families are affected.  

This is a parent-led initiative, and all funds will be managed by the Lighthouse School Home School Association, a registered non profit organisation.
